OUR HERITAGE

My great great Grandfather was James W. Vail. He was born in Jackson County, Alabama in 1837. He was the son of D.W. Vail, a leading professor of literature and languages, who spent his life teaching. James Vail married Francis Folsom in 1871. Francis was a Choctaw translator. They had six children. Their son, Charles E. Vail, is the original Enrollee and my great Grandfather. Charles Vail married Flora Guest, also Choctaw. Flora attended the Bacone Indian University and was part of the music department. My grandmother Nell and my mother Coleen were very proud of our Choctaw Heritage and ensured that we honor the Choctaw Nation's tradition and culture.
